Your first fish in five steps

   Check if you need a license

   The age differs by state: pick yours above.

   Get a simple kit

   • Rod and reel combo (spincast or spinning)
   • Small bobbers
   • Hooks, size 6 or 8
   • Split shot
   • Worms or crickets
   • Needle-nose pliers

   Pick a spot

   Start at an official lake that's open to the public.

   Rig a bobber and worm

   • Tie the hook on with an improved clinch knot.
   • Cast along the bank, next to weeds, docks or fallen trees.
   • When the bobber dips or runs, reel in.
5. 5

   Caught one?

   • Wet your hands, hold it gently and take the hook out with pliers.
   • Keeping it? Check the size and daily limit first.
